Here it is, one of the unicorns of the Abel Big Game series - a #0 with a solid spool. Why didn’t they make more of these? Who knows, but they should have. The solid spool adds some much needed weight to balance with classic fiberglass and cane rods while giving a classy and refined look. If I were you, I would probably be wondering - “so this is slightly heavier? well, how much does it weigh?” I put it on my scale and it came out at 5.0 oz on the dot. It’s a kitchen scale though, so it could go a tenth of an ounce either way. This particular reel comes with the original sawtooth drag plate set for right hand retrieve. The sawtooth only allows for one retrieve direction, but eliminates the slight rocking sensation before the drag engages that you find with the square tooth drag plates. Much tighter, but I understand for broad appeal why they switched to the square teeth. My understanding is that Abel may still sell square tooth drag plates if you’d like to have this converted to LHW. A call to Abel would let you know. This reel is in fantastic condition. It’s been fished, so there are some scuffs around the edges, but as you can see from the photos - nothing major. A well-maintained cork. Wood handle. Comes with a black nylon reel bag.
