First built before 1941, this reel was not known as a beachmaster but simply called a "light tackle casting reel." In the mid
Penn decided to put reels in named series with similar reels, and the Beachmaster series was born, featuring the 155, 160, and 165 models. Models 160 and 165 are similar, with the difference that the 165 lacked the star drag. There is a 156 model, but we have no information about that reel at this time.
The Penn Beachmaster 160 is a fun little reel. It was first made in 1941 and stayed in production until 1995. This reel is an early model as there is no Beachmaster branding, just the stamp that says "No. 160." This reel was just serviced by the best Reel Service Tech in Orange County California. He installed Carbon Drags and re-greased every moving part with the appropriate grease thickness required. I added the handle & knob, the e-lever, crossbars, and the reel seat & clamp. There is very little boat rash on this reel. Mostly on the chrome parts. It's got a great freespool and a loud, durable clicker. This reel would be great to catch bait fish with a sabiki rig or use it as a catfish set up at your favorite lake. It's a very cool reel, small, light, but strong.
