VTG 1967 USA Ocean City TT True Temper Baitreel Fishing Reel Saltwater

For your consideration is this vintage fishing reel produced by True Temper Corporation during the 1950s. The bakelite (tested positive with semichrome) is embossed and reads "OCEAN CITY / PHILA. / 981 / MADE IN / U.S.A". According to True Temper's 1967 advertisement, this reel is ideal for boat/bay saltwater fishing. It has True Temper's patented star drag and finger-tip free spool lever. The gear ratio is 3-to-1.Operating features of this reel include: Free Spool Lever: The free spool lever is located on the right sideplate. With this lever toward you, the spool is free for paying out line or for casting; with the lever away from you, the spool is engaged with the gearing for winding in line or holding the line against a fish. Anti-Backlash Knob: Slipping clutch arrangement of friction washers built into the right sideplate, adjusted by a star wheel, enables you to apply drag or tension to the spool and avoid burning your thubm when fighting a running fish. Turning star wheel away from you, increases drag; toward you, lessens drag. You cannot always "stop" a running fish -- when pull exceeds breaking strength of line; only a properly set star will allow line to slip and save your fish. You star drag has nothing to do with casting and should not be confused with the "casting drag" discussed under ANTI-BACKLASH KNOB. Click:  Sliding button on left sideplate when ON produces a clicking sound when spool revolves. This is a signalling device only and should be ON only to attract your attention while awaiting a strike. Clicks are no built to be used as drags on the spool -- do not allow click to remain on when casting or reeling in a fish. Suitable for Saltwater This reel is pre-owned and does show some wear. There is adequate tension when turning the handle. Abrasions are observed, but overall, the piece is in good condition.
