It was Akai's most undeniably beautiful 7" audio reel player ever produced. The smooth, sleek, silvery levers and unique mechanical operation set this machine apart from any other model. We set out, almost 15 years ago, to put together a collection that would bring back the year of 1981; the year this machine was first offered for sale to the public. To bring back the year of 1981 we had to set out and find every and any accessory, including this machine itself, in the highest quality possible. Beauty deserves to be preserved and we believe you agree. Only the finest pieces were assembled and collected, individually, from all over the world to create what is presented here for you; a dazzling masterful collection that is unavailable anywhere else in the world. We asked, "What would we love to see for sale if we desired only the finest unit and accessories from that exact time period? " We believe we have the answer. We sought after each accessory as a matching collection by making sure the packaging matched in color and design. On nearly every accessory featured you will find Akai's diagonal 3-stripe rainbow. Every single picture in this listing has been photographed by us in a studio setting and are the actual items you will receive. This extremely special machine features the GX focused field for high performance recording. The core of the GX Head is made of single crystal ferrite and is mounted and set in glass. This focused field recording system minimizes high frequency loss, eliminates undue equalization and achieves wider dynamic range in playback as well. The shining brushed aluminum presents an air of absolute elegance not seen on other units. The care and protection provided to this unit shows quite clearly. The pinch roller bays and loading compartment show absolutely no signs of oxide residue from tape usage. Everything is gorgeous and clean. There is truly no other GX-77 unit that stands above this in cleanliness and beauty. The original pinch rollers had absolutely no signs of use but since the rubber was over 35 years old we wanted to give the pinch rollers a fresh rework for the future. Brand new rubber was professionally applied to the pinch rollers, while keeping the original Akai metal cores, and they are ready for immediate use with your precious audio reels. Your classics, your favorites, the ones you hold most dear, are safe in the hands of this magnificent machine with its smooth mechanical operation. As you can see below, the pinch rollers are pristine and new. The smooth pinch roller caps are an eye-catching and vibrant silver color with no trace of oxide residue or debris. They are flawless. What is common for us to find when removing these caps (to install new rollers) is that on the reverse side of the caps are stains from oxide, however that is not the case here. We can confirm that the reverse sides of these pinch roller caps, as well, are pristine and perfectly clean. The internal belts, as well, have all been completely and carefully replaced – due to lack of motion, and due to years of being stationary, the belts had lost their original shape. This unit was purchased in Japan in 1982 (Paperwork that mentions Akai America comes included with this system). It was brought to the United States in that same year. It was used to transfer a single LP to magnetic tape and then returned to its plastic covering, foam inserts, and box. The unit has been protected through the decades and precisely the one we wanted to see presented here. We searched for many years looking for the perfect Akai GX – 77 unit to include with our extremely special accessory collection and only one stood out to us as being truly worthy . Item works wonderfully and plays in both directions as expected. During our very sensitive testing we all agreed on the output quality of the audio - it is beautiful. We believe this is the greatest unit available as it has sat protected for over 35 years. When one sets out to purchase a reel to reel machine the most important thing to search for is the quality of the GX heads which are what read information from the tape during playback. With such amazing quality heads as this unit has we do not believe any higher tape clarity can be expected. Please see our up-close photo of one of the heads on this system. We wanted you to see for yourself. With the Akai GX Head employed in this model, high range frequencies can be recorded in all their true fidelity covering 30,000 Hz (EE Position) with low noise tape even while recording at 0dB level. In other words, with this very special GX Head, high fidelity recording can be accomplished over the entire frequency spectrum for a wide dynamic range and excellent signal-to-noise ratio. MAXELL XLII EE 35-90 Sound Recording Tape for Studio Mastering (We have additionally included a brand new u nopened 7" Maxell XLII audio reel in factory plastic. This special tape is specifically designed to record and playback using this GX-77's "EE" position switch for extended clarity. This tape was manufactured for wide dynamic range and low distortion.) This also has the " EE Position " tape setting for the highest possible clarity and we have additionally provided this specific tape for your convenience. The original owner mentioned that from the very first day he purchased it there has been an unsecured screw on the front panel. We discovered this untightened screw and secured it for cosmetic purposes. While the screw is not needed we felt it was more cosmetically balanced to keep it on the machine. A very low level static can be heard when adjusting the potentiometers but is fully expected with the age of this machine and can be remedied at your leisure. We felt any further invasive action in the unit might cause cosmetic blemishes so we erred on the side of caution for us and for you. We offer a 30 day return on this complete system. We also have replacement parts available for this machine for a full year after purchase. Replacement part unit is in good overall condition with parts standing by should anything fail you or become damaged from normal use. This has taken many years of our lives to assemble and we are extremely confident you will enjoy what you receive. This is a very special collection for a very special collector.
