1954 Great Lakes 75 Whirlaway Vintage 2 Pc Fishing Rod and Reel After World War II, one of the best known spinning reel and rod combinations was the Great Lakes Whirlaway, which had a large, bulbous housing for the reel on the end of the rod. The spinning reel swivels within the bulbous-shaped housing. It was sold during the 1950's, the combo based on at least 4 patents, two issued in 1942 and 1956, and two issued in 1956 and 1957. The housing reel is pivoted to alternate casting and retrieval positions. The rod is fastened to the reel housing by screws, making it a set. Manufactured by Great Lakes Products in Detroit, Michigan. This combo is in good condition for it's age with some wear from age and use. There is some patina to the chrome trim, but the reel can probably be used if it were lubricated and given some fresh line. The rod is original to the reel.
